Why is a competitor outranking me on Google Maps?
Short answer: they're probably closer to the searcher, a better category match, or more prominent, for example with more reviews or links (Google Business Profile Help: Tips to improve your local ranking). Sometimes they're breaking the guidelines. Find out where they beat you before you decide what to do.
1. Map where they beat you
A competitor across town may win only near their own address. Check the same keyword from points across your area. You may find they win in one district and you win in another.
2. Compare the controllable factors
| Factor | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Primary category | Is theirs a closer match to the search? |
| Completeness | Services, hours, photos, description |
| Reviews | Count, rating, how recent, replies |
| Website | A relevant location page, consistent details |
| Links and mentions | Local press, associations, suppliers |
Relevance and prominence are Google's terms (Google Business Profile Help: Tips to improve your local ranking). Practitioner surveys like the Whitespark Local Search Ranking Factors survey add opinions on how much each factor weighs.
3. Check if they're breaking the rules
Keyword-stuffed names, fake addresses and fake reviews break Google's guidelines (Google Business Profile Help: Guidelines for representing your business). Use "Suggest an edit" on Maps for a wrong name or address. Don't make false reports, and don't copy their tactics, because a suspension costs far more than a lower position (Google Business Profile Help: Fix suspended or disabled profiles).
4. Close the gap where it matters
Focus on the areas and keywords that bring you customers. Improve the factors you can control, then re-measure the same grid to see whether the gap is closing.
See your real Maps footprint
RankFootprint runs your keyword from a grid of points across your service area and shows your rank at each one, so you can see where you show up, where you don't, and who beats you there. Scan results come from SerpApi, a third-party API that retrieves Google Maps search results on our behalf. Results reflect what Google showed at the time of the scan. We don't guarantee any ranking.
FAQ
Can I report a competitor with a fake Google Business Profile?
Yes. Use Suggest an edit on Google Maps for wrong details. Google's guidelines page explains what's allowed. Only report real violations.
Why does a competitor with fewer reviews rank above me?
Reviews are only part of prominence. Distance and relevance (for example a closer category match) can outweigh review count at a given point.
Will copying a competitor's categories help me rank?
Only if those categories are true for your business. Wrong categories break the guidelines and can bring the wrong customers.
