How do I check my Google Maps ranking in different areas?

Short answer: you need to run the same search as if you were standing at different points. You can do that by hand, by searching with a location in the query, or with a grid scan that checks many points at once and maps the results.

Why location matters

Google ranks local results partly on distance from the searcher (Google Business Profile Help: Tips to improve your local ranking), so your rank where you are says little about your rank five miles away. Background on this: why Maps rankings change across town.

Option 1: drive around and search (free, slow)

Searching on your phone from different places is real data, but personal history, signed-in state and exact position all vary. It's hard to repeat the same way next month.

Option 2: add a place to the search (free, rough)

Searching "dentist in [neighbourhood]" tells you something, but it's a different query from "dentist near me" made by someone standing there. Treat it as a rough check.

Option 3: a grid scan (repeatable)

A grid scan runs your keyword from a fixed set of map coordinates and records your rank at each one. Because the points stay the same, you can compare month to month. Pick a grid with our free grid scan planner and learn to read the results.

What any tool can't tell you

No tool sees exactly what every person sees. Results can vary by device and account. A scan shows what Google returned for those coordinates at that time. It's an estimate, not a guarantee.

See your real Maps footprint

RankFootprint runs your keyword from a grid of points across your service area and shows your rank at each one, so you can see where you show up, where you don't, and who beats you there. Scan results come from SerpApi, a third-party API that retrieves Google Maps search results on our behalf. Results reflect what Google showed at the time of the scan. We don't guarantee any ranking.

FAQ

Is there a free way to check my Google Maps ranking in other cities?

Yes. Search on your phone from those places, or add the place name to your search. Both are rough and hard to repeat. RankFootprint also offers a free scan.

Why is my ranking different on my phone than for my customers?

Google uses the searcher's location, and results can vary by device and account, so your phone mostly shows your view from where you are.

How often should I check my Maps ranking?

Monthly is enough for most businesses. Check again after major profile changes or a suspected drop.
